Since the achievement of the initial operational capability (IOC) in November 2007, the P-3C ORION weapon system has been used within the scope of the Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and has fully demonstrated its capacity.
The Bundeswehr purchased 8 P-3C ORION aircraft from the Netherlands in 2006 and they are stationed at the Naval Air Wing 3 “Graf Zeppelin”. The P-3 C replaced the 40 years old BREGUET ATLANTIC BR 1150 aircraft that were successively decommissioned.

The Lockheed P-3C ORION is a four-engine turboprop aircraft which is used worldwide as maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. The P-3C ORION is equipped with data communication systems and can thus be employed for network centric operations in a joint and combined context. As a force multiplier, this weapons system thus contributes considerably to the information and command and control superiority and to superior engagement capability of the armed forces. By means of routine inspections, obsolescences in the fields of communication, navigation and structure are reflected by measures to extend and sustain service life.
