WTD 41 - Portrait

WTD 41 is the center of technological competence supporting the German Ministry of Defense, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, the armed forces as well as other national and international customers, both government agencies and civilian companies, in the field of Bundeswehr land-based vehicle systems (wheeled and tracked vehicles, specialized vehicles and vehicles with various accessories and special fittings) and their respective components (drive and chassis components, electro-chemical energy sources and storage devices, electrical components, test equipment and vetronics) as well as Bundeswehr engineer and general field equipment.

The unique competencies of the Bundeswehr Technical Center for Land-Based Vehicle Systems, Engineer and General Field Equipment stem from the synergy achieved, on the one hand, by joining infrastructural and personnel competencies and, on the other hand, by efficiently concentrating various resources at one location. The expertise which the WTD staff has gained in the fields of systems technology and methodology is second to none and attractive both for the defense industry and for the civilian automotive industry.

Furthermore, WTD 41 is the center of technological competence in the field of Bundeswehr engineer support and general field equipment. Besides performing technical tasks in the fields of hydraulics, mobile electric energy supply, pressurized gas technology and air-conditioning technology, it mainly conducts tests on armored vehicle-launched bridges, fixed bridges, amphibious bridges, ferries, assault boats and amphibious land vehicles (as far as their amphibious capabilities are concerned).

Moreover, all systems and components of field camps are tested and evaluated. These tasks are particularly important for the missions of Bundeswehr crisis response forces (KRK).

In addition, WTD 41 provides technical support for fueling trucks and mobile POL containers of various types – even during in-service use.

A pipeline test facility is used to provide post-design support for the mobile Bundeswehr field pipeline equipment and the NATO Central European pipeline system.

The main areas of responsibility of the Bundeswehr Technical Center for Land-Based Vehicle Systems, Engineer and General Field Equipment are:

  • Testing / study and assessment of land-based vehicle systems,
  • Testing / study of vehicle assemblies,
  • Overall technical responsibility for the technological aspects of vehicle components,
  • Research and technology studies into vehicle-specific applications,
  • Technical support of the Project Management at the responsible management agency as well as
  • Cooperation with universities and international technical defense institutions and participation in international panels (e.g. NATO working groups),
  • Conduct of experimental and analytical studies and integrated compliance demonstration activities within the Customer Product Management (CPM) process,
  • Testing / study and assessment of engineer support and general field equipment,
  • Technical support and inputs to armament projects as well as

WTD 41 currently has a staff of about 470. Furthermore, WTD 41 offers vocational training to about five apprentices per year in the following occupations:

  • Motor vehicle mechatronics technician
