The German Liaison Office for Defense Materiel U.S.A./Canada in Reston, Virginia, is an agency subordinate to the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).

Situated in the immediate vicinity of the US capital Washington, D.C., the German Liaison Office for Defense Materiel, U.S.A./Canada, is the point of contact for the German Federal Ministry of Defense, the BAAINBw and the Bundeswehr research establishments and institutes.

The round coat of arms has a red border with the inscription “Federal Republic of Germany – Verbindungsstelle des Rüstungsbereiches”. Located inside are the federal eagle, the flags of the USA and Canada and the lettering “Liaison Office for Defense Materiel – U.S.A / Canada” on a golden background.

The German Liaison Office for Defense Material U.S.A./Canada represents the Bundeswehr’s interests in matters of defense technology and armaments vis-à-vis the armed forces and agencies of the United States of America and Canada (U.S.A.) and the industry of these countries. Transatlantic cooperation covers a wide spectrum of defense-related technologies and various weapon systems in the areas of land, air and sea.

About half of its personnel is employed in liaison and project offices that are spread out all over the United States.

The German Liaison Office for Defense Material U.S.A./Canada

  • supports and promotes armaments cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America and Canada, with the principal objective of providing service personnel of the Bundeswehr and friendly armed forces with the best possible equipment;
  • acts as a competent point of contact for initiating and coordinating armaments cooperation with the U.S.A. and Canada in the fields of research and technology, common development and procurement programs, support of the German defense industry, acquisition of US-American and Canadian defense materiel and exchange of defense engineers, scientists and administrative personnel;
  • contributes to establishing mutual trust needed for effective transatlantic armaments cooperation by way of continuous dialog with the US and Canadian partners.
