The Bundeswehr Technical Centers
The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Land-Based Vehicle Systems, Engineer and General Field Equipment (WTD 41) in Trier is an impartial center of technological competence supporting the German Ministry of Defense (MOD), the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Informatione Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), the German armed forces (Bundeswehr) as well as other national and international customers – both government agencies and civilian companies – in matters of technical expertise, analysis, assessment and qualification.
The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Protective and Special Technologies (WTD 52) in Oberjettenberg is the armed forces' point of contact for any questions relating to direct and indirect protection and is also in charge of a range of matters relating to special technologies.
Bundeswehr Technical Center for Aircraft and Aeronautical Equipment (WTD 61), located in Manching, is the responsible Bundeswehr authority which ensures that all aircraft in service are safe and comply with their performance parameters – in the interest of both the aircrew's and the population's safety.
The responsibilities of the Bundeswehr Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons, Maritime Technology and Research (WTD 71) cover the entire range of naval defense technology during all phases of the defense acquisition cycle.
The core tasks of the Bundeswehr Technical Center for Information Technology and Electronics (WTD 81), located in Greding, can be subdivided into integrated compliance demonstrations for systems and equipment, research & technology activities as defined by the MOD R&T program, as well as the provision of technical and other expert advice in support of projects managed by BAAINBw and the Bundeswehr IT Office.
With its staff of about 900, this agency is the Bundeswehr center of technological competence in all matters relating to weapons and ammunition. WTD 91 covers an area of 200 square kilometres and is thus the largest instrumented firing range in Western Europe.
The Bundeswehr Research Institutes
The Bundeswehr Research Institute for Materials, Fuels and Lubricants (WIWeB), located in Erding, develops and implements the scientific and technological methods and principles required for the study and evaluation of materials, fuels and lubricants as well as textiles and chemicals, with special focus on the practical aspects of their chemical, physical and safety-relevant properties.
The Bundeswehr Research Institute for Protective Technologies and CBRN Protection (WIS), located in Munster, is the only major German institute dealing with the issue of protection against the effects of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons of mass destruction.
The Naval Arsenal With Its Installations
At its two locations at the North Sea (Wilhelmshaven) and Baltic Sea (Kiel), respectively, the Naval Arsenal carries out all maintenance activities above unit level for units afloat as well as shore facilities of the Navy.
The German Liaison Office USA/Canada
The German Liaison Office for Defense Materiel, U.S.A/Canada is an agency subordinate to the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology an In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and represents the German position in matters of defense technology or armaments when dealing with US or Canadian government agencies or industry.
