The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons Maritime Technology and Research (WTD 71) belongs to the BAAINBw organization. It is located in Eckernförde (Schleswig-Holstein) and was founded in 1957.

The responsibilities of WTD 71 cover the entire range of naval defense technology during all phases of the defense acquisition cycle. Most of its activities focus on the overall system aspects of ships as well as the interdependencies between various components and the system as a whole in a naval environment.

To enable WTD 71 to carry out its tasks in the field of defense technology and science and to perform maritime weapon systems and equipment testing the Bundeswehr technical center can rely on the following resources some of which are unique with Bundeswehr, in Europe or even worldwide:

  • Facilities for magnetic measurement and treatment of ships and components, such as a large test device for ships and submarines simulating the Earth's magnetic field in order to determine the magnetic protection level of a ship, or the large magnetic component ranging system to measure components during the construction phase of a unit
  • Measurement sites to measure the acoustic radiation of ships and boats in shallow and deep waters
  • Range tracking systems (both under and above water), underwater test facility, torpedo firing position and range
  • Test stands for shock, vibration, climate, resistance to corrosion, flammability and engineering tests
  • Fleet of nine modern trial ships and boats, including the research ship "Planet"

In many subject fields, WTD 71 cooperates closely with other Bundeswehr research and test centers. This arrangement helps make the best possible use of all available resources and avoid redundancies in terms of specialists and test facilities.
The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons has the following responsibilities:

  • Integrated compliance demonstration;
  • Provision of professional expertise for the Navy, BAAINBw and industry through all phases from the pre-phase to service use;
  • Research & Technology for navy-specific equipment (including weapon systems);
  • Technical support of fielded naval weapon systems;
  • Representation of Germany at international panels.

WTD 71 currently has a staff of about 610. Furthermore, WTD 71 offers vocational training to about apprentices a year in the following occupation:

  • Electronics technician for equipment and systems
